What are Breast Implants?

Breast augmentation is a cosmetic procedure that uses implants to enlarge and shape the breasts. Many women who choose to have breast enhancement surgery do so to improve their self-image. Some feel dissatisfied because their breasts never developed to a size that meets their expectations, while others look to bring balance to a breast that is somewhat smaller than the other. Often, women look to breast implants to restore their natural breast volume, which may have decreased as a result of pregnancy, weight loss or aging.

Today women have more choices when it comes to breast implants. Women are able and encouraged to meet with Dr. Mazaheri to discuss their goals and needs. You will discuss the type of breast implants you wish to have as well as the size and shape you would like your breasts to be.

This information will help him decide the best approach for you and which type of implant – either silicone or saline – will provide you with the most natural looking results.

What Women Need to Know About Breast Implants and Breast Implant Surgery

Dr. Mazaheri has used silicone implants on many satisfied women who agree that that they feel very similar to natural breast tissue. There are several things that are considered when deciding how to insert the breast implants and where they should be placed. Some factors include anatomy, desired outcome, implant size, and quality of the breast tissue.

Dr. Mazaheri prefers to place the implant under the muscle, behind the breast, as there are several advantages to doing so.

Specially trained in surgical techniques for breast implants, Dr. Mazaheri uses one of the following breast implant surgery techniques, according to the individual needs of each patient:

Sub Glandular

Sub glandular placement puts the breast implant right behind the breast, but in front of the chest wall.

Semi or Partial Sub Muscular

Semi or partial sub muscular placement positions the implant behind the breast and partially in the chest muscle wall. With sub muscular breast implant surgery, the breast implant is placed directly behind the breast while the other part of the implant is imbedded in the chest wall.

The pectoral muscle is cut so that part of the implant can be inserted under the muscle.

Complete or Full Sub Muscular

Many favor complete, or full sub muscular, implant placement. Here, the breast implant is placed completely behind the chest wall muscle. Full sub muscular surgery tends to produce more natural looking and feeling results.

Are you a candidate for implants?

Any of the following feelings or conditions may indicate that you are a good candidate for breast implants:

  • The feeling that your breasts are too small bothers you
  • Weight loss has changed the size and shape of your breasts
  • After pregnancy, your breasts have become smaller and have lost their firmness
  • Dresses that fit well around your hips are often too large at the bust line
  • One of your breasts is noticeably smaller than the other
  • You feel self-conscious wearing a swim suit or form-fitting tops

Some patients that opt for breast implants also choose to have a breast lift. Schedule a consult or call for more information today.

Common Questions and Concerns

A common concern that some women have about breast augmentation surgery is whether their breasts will still feel natural. Many are also concerned about retaining sensation in their breasts after surgery. Often the inframammary approach for breast augmentation, often used by Dr. Mazaheri, is used to help address these medical concerns.

A small incision in the inframammary crease allows the implant to be inserted generally under the pectoral muscle. This method is used to retain sensation in the breasts, and also reduces the visibility of any (already) minimal scarring.

As many considering breast augmentation already know, breast implants do not last forever. When the time comes to replace your implants, this placement helps ensure there will be no new scars to worry about.

Will My Breast Implants Last?

Another common question or concern that women have when considering breast augmentation surgery, is how long breast implants last.

Unfortunately, there is truly no definitive answer to this question, as a breast implant has an indeterminable life span and neither two breast implants, nor breast implant patients are exactly the same.

Some studies that have been done on silicone breast implants show that the average silicone implant can last for 7-12 years, with some lasting as long as 15 years. While there are some who have had breast implants last a shorter time than others, there are many more that are extremely satisfied with the results of their breast augmentation.

If you are considering breast augmentation surgery, it is important to keep in mind that these implants will not last you forever. One of the keys to your happiness with your breast augmentation is finding a plastic surgeon that can help you navigate the full process.
