About the Procedure

Breast augmentation is a cosmetic procedure that uses implants to enlarge and shape the breasts. Many women who choose to have breast enhancement surgery do so to improve their self-image. Some feel dissatisfied because their breasts never developed to a size that meets their expectations, while others look to bring balance to a breast that is somewhat smaller than the other. Often, women look to breast implants to restore their natural breast volume, which may have decreased as a result of pregnancy, weight loss or aging.

Today women have more choices when it comes to breast implants. Women are encouraged to meet with Dr. Mazaheri to discuss their goals and needs. You will discuss the type of breast implants you wish to have as well as the size and shape you would like your breasts to be.  This information will help him decide the best approach for you and which type of implant either silicone or saline will provide you with the most natural looking results.

Are You a Candidate for Implants?

Any of the following feelings or conditions may indicate that you are a good candidate for breast implants:

  • The feeling that your breasts are too small bothers you
  • Weight loss has changed the size and shape of your breasts
  • After pregnancy, your breasts have become smaller & lost firmness
  • Dresses that fit well around your hips are too large at the bust line
  • One of your breasts is noticeably smaller than the other
  • You feel self-conscious wearing a swim suit or form-fitting tops

Some patients that opt for breast implants also choose to have a breast lift. Schedule a consult or call for more information today.

What Women Need to Know About Breast Implants and Surgery

Dr. Mazaheri has used silicone implants on many satisfied women who agree that that they feel very similar to natural breast tissue. There are several things that are considered when deciding how to insert the breast implants and where they should be placed. Some factors include anatomy, desired outcome, implant size, and quality of the breast tissue.

Dr. Mazaheri prefers to place the implant under the muscle, behind the breast, as there are several advantages to doing so.

Specially trained in surgical techniques for breast implants, Dr. Mazaheri uses one of the following breast implant surgery techniques, according to the individual needs of each patient:

Sub-Grandular

Sub glandular placement puts the breast implant right behind the breast, but in front of the chest wall.

Semi or Partial Sub-Muscular

Semi or partial sub muscular placement positions the implant behind the breast and partially in the chest muscle wall. With sub muscular breast implant surgery, the breast implant is placed directly behind the breast while the other part of the implant is imbedded in the chest wall. The pectoral muscle is cut so that part of the implant can be inserted under the muscle.

Complete or Full Sub-Muscular

Many favor complete, or full sub muscular, implant placement. Here, the breast implant is placed completely behind the chest wall muscle. Full sub muscular surgery tends to produce more natural looking and feeling results.

Common Questions and Concerns

Will my breasts still feel natural?

A common concern that some women have about breast augmentation surgery is whether their breasts will still feel natural. Many are also concerned about retaining sensation in their breasts after surgery. Often the inframammary approach for breast augmentation, often used by Dr. Mazaheri, is used to help address these medical concerns.

A small incision in the inframammary crease allows the implant to be inserted generally under the pectoral muscle. This method is used to retain sensation in the breasts, and also reduces the visibility of any (already) minimal scarring.

As many considering breast augmentation already know, breast implants do not last forever. When the time comes to replace your implants, this placement helps ensure there will be no new scars to worry about.

How long will my breast implants last?

Another common question or concern that women have when considering breast augmentation surgery, is how long breast implants last.

Unfortunately, there is truly no definitive answer to this question, as a breast implant has an indeterminable life span and neither two breast implants, nor breast implant patients are exactly the same.

Some studies that have been done on silicone breast implants show that the average silicone implant can last for 7-12 years, with some lasting as long as 15 years. While there are some who have had breast implants last a shorter time than others, there are many more that are extremely satisfied with the results of their breast augmentation.

If you are considering breast augmentation surgery, it is important to keep in mind that these implants will not last you forever. One of the keys to your happiness with your breast augmentation is finding a plastic surgeon that can help you navigate the full process. Know all of your options and the facts about the type of breast implants that you choose.

Dr. Mazaheri always takes the time necessary to speak with his patients about each of their options to ensure the best possible surgery and the best possible results.

What happens during a breast augmentation consultation?

Simply put, breast augmentation is a cosmetic procedure in which implants are put inside your breasts to enlarge and shape them.

The first step is having a consultation with a plastic surgeon to discuss your choices. Once you’ve decided on the right procedure, you should work in collaboration with your surgeon to find the right implants for achieving the results you want.

What are the different types of breast implants?

Saline Implants
Saline breast implants are filled with a salt water solution. If this type of implant ruptures, the implant will deflate, with the body safely absorbing the saline.

Silicone Implants
84% of US patients choose silicone over saline implants. Filled with silicone gel, these are the most popular type of implant due to their natural feel (similar to breast tissue) and the fact they won’t collapse if a rupture occurs. You can also choose a firmer silicone implant which people refer to as ‘gummy bear’ due to the ability to maintain their shape, even if broken.

Implants can be placed both over or under the muscle, but research has shown that in many cases, placing the implant under the muscle is more beneficial. Your surgeon will talk through factors such as desired outcomes, quality of breast tissue, and implant size when determining the right technique.

Choosing the right implants

Choosing the right breast implants will depend on a variety of factors. Bras from different manufacturers will fit differently, so it’s not as simple as choosing a cup size.

There are literally hundreds of implants to choose from, but finding the right one depends on your goals and how each implant will look in conjunction with your current breast size and shape.

Factors to consider include:

Current breast measurements & how the implant dimensions will affect them. This includes the implant’s base width and how far it will project from your body compared with your current breast size. Implant profiles can be low, moderate, high, or ultra-high, and volume is measured in cc’s.

Body shape

Factors such as height, weight and frame will affect how natural an implant will look for your body. As your profile measurements increase in size, the implant size may also need to increase. This is essential for maintaining a proportional look.

Shapes & styles

Implant shapes and styles can vary, but the most common are round and shaped (tear drop) implants. Shaped implants add a more natural look where there’s little chest volume, but round ones are commonly used for their fuller appearance.

Your personal goals and expectations

Why are you opting for this type of procedure, and what do you want the outcome to be? You may struggle fitting dresses over both your hips and chest area or have lost firmness in your breasts since having children. Perhaps you’ve always felt your breasts are too small and want to enhance your self-confidence. Whatever the aim, put this at the heart of choosing the right implant.

Your worries

It’s natural to feel nervous about a procedure, but ensure you share your concerns with your surgeon as they may be able to alleviate your anxieties. Concerns don’t even have to be about the way you look. For example, if you play a sport, you may be worried breast augmentation may hinder your performance. You may also have concerns about recovery time. An experienced surgeon will take these into consideration when working with you to find the right implant.

It’s important you’re happy with the appearance of your breasts after the augmentation. A good surgeon will guide you towards the right choice to fit your needs.
