What Is Breast Reduction Surgery?

Breast reduction surgery is a surgical procedure that removes excess fat, tissue, and skin from the breasts. The right candidate for breast reduction surgery will likely experience issues such as:

  • Persistent pain in the lower back, neck, or shoulders
  • Skin grooves caused by bra straps
  • Concerned with breast size impacting body image
  • Issues with fitting into clothing
  • Frequent infections underneath the breast fold

While breast reduction can assist with many of these issues, for patients with specific circumstances, including:

  • Breast size is not fully stabilized
  • Obese body weight
  • Frequent smoker
  • Want their breasts to be scar-free

Benefits of Breast Reduction Surgery

Breast reduction surgery can greatly improve the lives of our patients. Below are some of the benefits of breast reduction surgery.

  • Physical Pain Relief: Large breasts can strain the body, resulting in lower back, neck, and shoulder pain. Reducing breast size can relieve patients of this discomfort and improve their quality of life.
  • Improved Posture and Mobility: Weight from excess breast tissue can impact posture and mobility. Once reduced and lifted, patients may experience improved posture and easier mobility.
  • Greater Clothing Options: For some patients, a large breast size restricts them from wearing certain clothing. A reduction can allow patients to enjoy a wide range of clothing options.
  • Enhanced Self-Esteem and Body Proportion: Breast reduction helps to better align with the patient’s ideal breast size, allowing them to feel better physically and enjoy improved body confidence.

The Procedure: What to Expect

Pre-operative Consultation

First and foremost, always consult a licensed and certified plastic surgeon, like Dr.Mazaheri. They will discuss your goals, evaluate your medical history, and chat about your current health. They will also ask certain questions about candidacy, such as habits like smoking and medication usage.

If you are considered a breast reduction candidate, your surgeon will offer personalized options so that your reduction meets your image and health goals.

Surgical Details

There are a few ways to perform breast reduction surgery. Your surgeon can perform liposuction, where small incisions are created through which a tube is placed to suction excess fat.

Other methods include vertical or lollipop techniques, where circular incisions are made around the nipple and a straight incision is made on the crease beneath the breast. The resulting scars look similar to lollipops.

The inverted T, also called the anchor technique, creates incisions around the areola’s edge to the breast crease, and then horizontally along the breast crease. This incision is typically for larger reductions.

Recovery Timeline

After surgery, your surgeon will provide post-operative care and schedule follow-up appointments for recovery and stitch removal. Ensure to take at least a week off from work to recover.

Limit activities to slow movements and regular eating and drinking during the initial weeks of recovery.

Gradually increase your activities, but consult your surgeon for approval. Typically, you should be able to return to your normal routine within 6 to 8 weeks.

It is always best to set the right expectations for proper recovery. Issues like swelling and bruising will subside over time. A major concern, like scarring, slowly fades, ultimately maturing around 6 to 12 months.

Be patient and follow your surgeon’s instructions, allowing your body the healing it needs. Soon enough, the results will speak for themselves.

Frequently Asked Questions

Am I a good candidate for breast reduction?

A good candidate for breast reduction surgery is a patient with healthy, stabilized breast size who also has realistic expectations. People who are pregnant or currently breastfeeding, obese, or have a medical disorder or infection that affects the breasts may not be good candidates for breast reduction.

Patients experiencing certain disorders or infections affecting wound healing or clotting should wait until their health improves before surgery. These medical conditions negatively affect the post-surgery healing process.

Will insurance cover my surgery?

Insurance will cover breast reduction surgery when necessary for medical treatment. However, insurance will consider breast reduction a cosmetic procedure until the patient can prove that they suffer from health issues and have attempted different remediation methods in the past.

How visible are the scars?

In some cases where larger amounts of breast tissue need to be removed, the surgery requires an extended horizontal incision along the inframammary crease. Breast reduction scarring can be concealed with most underwear, swimsuits, and blouses.

When can I resume work and exercise?

Light exercise 2 to 3 weeks after surgery is encouraged as long as it does not require heavier body movements.

Moderate exercise, such as cycling, is generally acceptable around 4 to 6 weeks post-op. Still, it’s advised to avoid anything that could strain the chest.

You should be well on your way to being fully healed after 8 weeks, but remember to take exercise slowly. As always, make sure you follow your surgeon’s instructions.

Can breast reduction be combined with other procedures?

Yes, it can. Breast reduction is commonly paired with a breast lift
